Woven Through Time: Vietnam's Long Textile Tradition

Updated: Apr 16, 2024

Vietnam's recovery from the devastating impact of wars has been nothing short of remarkable. The country is now in a phase of rapid growth and development. This resurgence is a testament to the resilience and tenacity of the Vietnamese people. As the nation rebuilds and prospers, the textile industry has played a pivotal role in fueling this economic resurgence. Vietnam has rapidly emerged as a top destination for the global exports in recent years but the textile industry in particular is considered the best choice for many foreign apparel companies for many good reasons.

A Garment House on Every Block

Vietnam boasts a rich and time-honored tradition in textile production, with a history that stretches back thousands of years. These age-old techniques have been passed down through generations, resulting in a pool of skilled artisans who take immense pride in their work. The blend of artistic intelligence and hard work is evident in the quality of textiles crafted in Vietnam.

During my time living there, it was a common sight to see fabric shops, garment stores, and tailors lining the streets of many neighborhoods. In Vietnam, almost everyone seems to have connections to the textile industry. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't know at least two or three people personally engaged in this sector.

. These charming garment houses are an integral part of daily life. Vietnamese people take great pride in their craftsmanship, with an unwavering commitment to even the tiniest of details. This dedication to excellence is also one of the reasons why Vietnamese-owned nail salons in the United States are often considered some of the more popular.

Youthful Workforce and Free Trade with the US

A significant portion of Vietnam's population belongs to the working-age group, making up about 60% of the nation's inhabitants. This demographic advantage ensures a constant influx of skilled, dynamic, and adaptable labor. The textile industry benefits greatly from this as it gains access to a workforce prepared to meet the ever-evolving demands of the market.

In addition to this, another compelling advantage lies in the recent trade agreement between the United States and Vietnam. This agreement offers businesses the opportunity to import various goods, including textiles and garments, into the United States with minimal to no import taxes compared to the 15-25% import taxes levied on products from China.
